Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol)
The "sunshine vitamin" — critical for immunity, bone health, mood regulation, and hormonal balance.
What It Is
Vitamin D3 is a fat-soluble pro-hormone synthesised in the skin upon UV-B exposure and activated by the kidneys and liver. It regulates over 200 genes involved in immune defence, bone mineralisation, insulin secretion, and mood. Vitamin D deficiency is endemic in South Africa despite abundant sunshine, primarily due to sun avoidance, sunscreen use, and darker skin tones requiring more UV exposure for synthesis.
What It Does
- Regulates immune system activation
- Essential for calcium absorption and bone density
- Modulates mood (linked to depression prevention)
- Supports hormonal balance
- Anti-inflammatory gene regulation
Clinical Considerations
Fat-soluble — can accumulate. Serum 25-OH Vitamin D levels should ideally be checked before high-dose supplementation. A clinical assessment is standard.
